What Is a GFCI Outlet?

A GFCI outlet is a receptacle with a built-in sensor that cuts power in a fraction of a second if it detects current leaking where it should not, such as through a person or into water. The test and reset buttons on its face let you check it monthly.

Where are GFCI outlets required in a home?

Code calls for GFCI protection where water and electricity are likely to meet: kitchens, bathrooms, garages, outdoor outlets, laundry areas, basements and around pools. Exact rules vary by code edition, so older homes may have fewer GFCIs than newer ones.

Many Arizona homes built in earlier decades predate current rules. If you own an older home in Sun City or central Glendale, it is worth checking which outlets have the test and reset buttons and which do not.

A GFCI can be an outlet or a breaker in the panel. Either one protects the outlets on its line, so the protection may not be visible at every plug.

Bathrooms and kitchens are the most familiar locations, but garages and outdoor outlets matter just as much in Arizona, where hoses, pressure washers and sprinklers create wet conditions on hot concrete. Check the outlet near pool equipment and exterior walls, because those are the places people forget.

How do you test and reset a GFCI outlet?

Press the test button and the outlet should click off and lose power, then press reset to restore it. Plug in a lamp or radio beforehand to confirm power cuts out. If the outlet does not trip or will not reset, it needs to be replaced.

Testing monthly is the usual advice, and it takes seconds. A GFCI that never trips when tested is not protecting anyone, and the plug-in tester sold at hardware stores gives a second opinion.

If one GFCI controls several outlets, a dead outlet in the garage or bathroom may simply need a reset on a different GFCI elsewhere in the house. Check the kitchen and exterior outlets first before assuming wiring has failed.

Do the test with something plugged in, like a lamp, so you can see the power drop. After pressing reset, the lamp should come back on. Some newer GFCIs have a status light that warns when protection has worn out, so look for it before relying on the outlet.

Why does a GFCI outlet keep tripping?

A GFCI keeps tripping when it detects real leakage, which can come from moisture in the outlet box, a damaged cord or tool, a failing appliance, or a worn out GFCI. Dust, heat and sprinkler spray also cause nuisance trips on outdoor and garage outlets in Arizona.

Unplug everything on the circuit and reset. If it holds, plug devices back in one at a time to find the culprit. If it trips with nothing plugged in, moisture or a faulty GFCI is likely.

Monsoon storms are hard on exterior outlets. Make sure outdoor outlets have a proper in-use cover. Repeated tripping that you cannot trace to a device is a reason to stop and call an electrician.

Heat is hard on the electronics inside a GFCI, and a garage that bakes all summer can wear one out sooner than an outlet in a hallway. If you replace a tripping GFCI and the new one trips too, the problem is probably in the wiring or a connected device.

Is a GFCI the same as an AFCI?

No. A GFCI protects people from shock by sensing current leaking to ground, while an AFCI protects against fires by sensing dangerous arcing in wiring. Some modern circuits need both, and dual function breakers combine the two types of protection in the panel.

Bedrooms and living areas in newer homes often rely on AFCI breakers, while kitchens and baths lean on GFCI. Your panel label usually shows which breakers have test buttons.

Vortech can inspect and replace worn GFCIs and add protection where it is missing. If you are not sure what protects an area of your home, call a licensed electrician through the button on this page.

Breakers with GFCI or AFCI protection cost more than standard breakers, but they protect every outlet on the circuit. Newer construction often uses this approach, and older homes can sometimes be upgraded circuit by circuit when an electrician reviews what each room needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a GFCI outlet go bad?

Yes. GFCI outlets contain electronics that wear out, and heat, moisture and power surges shorten their life. If a GFCI will not reset, will not trip when tested, or feels warm to the touch, it should be replaced rather than left in service.

Does one GFCI protect other outlets?

Yes. An outlet wired to the load terminals of a GFCI is protected by it. That is why one tripped GFCI can kill power to several outlets, sometimes in different rooms, and why finding the reset button can take a moment.

Why is the power out in my garage?

A tripped GFCI is the most common reason a garage or outdoor outlet has no power. Look for a reset button on garage, bathroom or exterior outlets, and check the main panel too. If it will not stay reset, call an electrician.
